We went and saw the Hobbit over the Christmas break. Nate and Whitney are HUUUUGE fans of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit just falls right in with that. Nate of course, has read the books. ***
I picked up my grocery list of must haves the day after we went to the movie and Whitney had added number 8.
I brought home this...
I had to look up the letters, but Nate had no trouble reading it, he informed he is fluent in elven.
***Christmas night we always go to a movie. As does most of the world who doesn't have 47 family celebrations to attend. We saw Les Miserables. It was a good movie. In the car on the way home Nate says "I didn't know it was a musical. I've read the book, and it was a really great book, it just was weird when they were pulling in the boat and started singing". Gotta love a kid that always says "I've read the book" and books are what he asks for for birthday and Christmas.

gotta love a teacher that tweets pictures of what your high school student is doing in class
she was one of a very few that would dissect the dead rat.

action shot...lol
live action - taken with my cell phone while i sat in the bleachers. didn't try real hard, but you get the idea how i've spent the last two saturdays and the next three...and many weekends of the last 5 years.

i have questions
when your co-worker has a “tail” clipped to the back of their clothes, do you tell them?
do some places actually have gradual changes in the weather or does everywhere see 30 degree temperature changes in a 12 hour period?
when I’m working out with marquis and have an audience waiting to see “how long it will be before she punches him”, is it too extreme?
how do you know when a 16 year old girl is really okay? moods change faster than the kansas weather.
you can unfriend/unfollow people on facebook and twitter. you can block them. Is there a way to wipe your mind clean of them? why can’t my mind be like an etch a sketch, turn it upside down and shake it clean. oooooh, better yet, a virus cleaner for your mind. yep, someone please invent this. and make it affordable.
how long can you sit in a meeting getting asked questions you can’t answer before you realize that they think you are someone else? well, not someone else, but they think that you do a different job then you do? really awkward meeting.
how long is it okay to dream about blowing an unexpected lump sum of money (ie. bonus/found money) before deciding to do the responsible thing?
can you maintain a “healthy lifestyle” and eat a piece of cake everyday?
do you have a friend you are close enough to buy her a pair of panties as a gift? that is a really close friend. whitney did this last week for a friend of hers. it was a moment when i wandered if i was not close enough to my friends to buy them panties or if i was close enough to know better than to buy them panties. denae loved them.

conversations with whitney
whitney: "kelsey and i are going to wear tutu's for the southeast game. it's pinkout night can you make me one?"
cue the internal silent celebration, i've been wanting to make her a tutu for years
me: "sure"
a trip to hancock fabric the next day, $17.00 and two hours, voila
whitney: "kelsey and i really wanted to match and she has a pink tutu, but really likes mine better. can you make one for her too?"
oh, be still my heart. this is like the year i got to make two little bo peep costumes for halloween for her and her second grade friend. (this should really be in the "does that make me crazy file, i'm so jazzed about another trip to hancock's and making another tutu and adding more ribbon bows at whitney's request.)

i love this girl...
madel: "j was talking at volleyball that it was karma that she wasn't going to get to start and was just a sub because her pregnant best friends boyfriend was over at her house and she has a big bruise on her neck where he was biting her for the last 12 hours. she's so ratchet. it's not karma she just wanted to tell me that story. like, j? seriously? that's so...."
and then her and whitney discuss women who don't respect other women's relationships. they don't excuse the guys at all, but they have nothing good to say about these girls. they have both seen it happen to their friends and to their moms. it's a little too close to home, sometimes.
i've been both girls. i don't like the way either one of them felt. i'm glad my girls whitney and madel have more respect for themselves then i had at that age. and more respect for other girls and their relationships than i had at that age.

rewind again...
i posted last year about this time that I hit the rewind button on my life and went back to 1990 and heard my favorite local college band.
it was about this time steve had knee surgery and toe surgery. right now, we are getting ready for his back surgery (tomorrow)
disability papers, doctor visits, time off from work. it was also first week of school and for the first time in 15 years it feels like an exact repeat of the year before. just whitney. Same school, same schedule, same kid. or is it???
how can she look so grown up
and then so young?
those déjà vu moments kind of weird me out. i’m kind of a creature of habit. like most, i get up about the same time every day, sometimes a little earlier or later, but not noticeably so. i shower, either before or after i run, brush my teeth, drink a diet coke.
i eat the same foods, small variations, but breakfast bar, granola bar, or fruit and yogurt, lunch is generally a salad. i get my workouts in, i run the same days every week, in theory.
housework, laundry, grocery shopping, carpool. to a large extent I hit rewind every sunday night and start over. that’s kind of a comfort. having routine. and this doesn't feel like rewind.
the weird stuff of repeating things that just don’t feel right or throw you off your game are not, well, they are not comfortable.
i was pretty stressed last week. typically i deal with stress fairly well. (or i think i do, don’t tell me different).
i can always tell when I’m on edge in one certain area of my life. when i’m behind the steering wheel. when i’m frustrated at the grandmas taking their kids to school driving 10 mph under the speed limit (this would be my mom). when the freshman parents don’t know the "proper" way to drop their kids off in the drop zone. when i’m mad at the rail road for letting a train go through town at 7:45 a.m. who schedules these things anyway? when i can’t drive and stay sane, i know i’m at my breaking point. (so i sit in the back seat with whitney driving and denae in the front seat. we took the scenic route, several times, because i wasn't paying attention or giving direction, but all roads lead to home...eventually).
so i went shopping. looked at furniture, it’s about time. (my kids are fighting over my old worn out comfortable couch and whitney thinks I should just put it in nate’s old bedroom). i worked out. i read my Bible. i browsed pinterest. (okay, sheila and cate's pinterest). i’m finding that’s not a good past time for me. i make what i like, i’ve already completed 3 projects and i haven’t been on it very long. found a shirt i fell in love with, so i bought it.
i feel better. the weekend leveled things out, and knowing tomorrow will help his pain makes a difference.
i did make a list of chores i want to get done in the days i’m home taking care of steve. fall housecleaning. i have 10 pairs of his old running shoes that need to go to the union rescue mission. (they are like new on the top, and the soles are in good condition, they just don’t have any running miles left in them). a closet that needs to be cleaned out. mirrors to replace. or at least get the glass ordered.
fortunately, steve’s an easy patient, so i should be able to accomplish several things. and he will feel better and be on the road to recovery.

whitney: i'm trying to cutback and i come home to a twelve pack in the fridge (dr. pepper). pats her stomach
me: i didn't know you were cutting back.
whitney: yes. just water and skim milk for me from now on.
me: only skim milk...on your cocoa pebbles.
whitney: i will never give up cocoa pebbles. you can only cut back so much.

me: there is other food in the house
whitney: i know. but i ate all the white frosting first before i had to start on the chocolate.

conversations with whitney
a picture is worth a thousand words, so here's a couple thousand words from whitney's summer, a trip to los angeles, with stops at albuquerque, venice beach, redondo beach, long beach, melrose and hollywood.
volleyball on the beach
doing laundry
bringin' sexy back
dirty dancing with patrick
then on to seattle with her cousin jeff to visit my brothers and sister in law.
49 degrees and snow at the top of the mountain
hiking
at the pier
i'm glad she got to go, but i'm so glad she's home.

setting: grocery store parking lot taking her to "night swim" at the public pool. we had to stop and get bread and milk and cash for her. we had mia and had taken her to the park, it's 102 degrees outside. i am wearing black capris (cut off's) work out pants and a 12 year old white tee shirt that is well worn and well loved and very holy. i mean holey? i mean you can see skin where you shouldn't see skin.
whitney: mooooommmmm, that tee shirt.
me: sorry, didn't think about changing before we left.
whitney: it's okay, i'm cute enough for both of us.

Whitney: Pretty sure today is the best day of my life. (She just got her driving permit).
Whitney: Pretty sure this is the BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!! (I had just told her that her and Nate's cell phone upgrades were in and I picked up her iphone.)
Whitney: THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!! (I told her she had tickets to Lion King the Musical).
Here is the first picture she took of her (and Denae and Madel) with the iphone.
I'm not sure the world is ready for a 16 year old driving-iphone-toting-patron-of-the-arts-Whitney. I'm not. Unless I can get her to take stuffed Simba to the musical....

Whitney is bumped today for Anneshia.
You know parents and grandparents always want to tell you how smart their kids are? I'll let you decide.
Neish: Can I have milk?
Me: (handing her milk) yes, but don't spill it.
Neish: (two seconds later) I spilled it
Me: (heading toward the mess with a towel)
Neish: Whacha doin?
Me: cleaning up your mess.
Neish: You made a mess?
Me: No, you did. You spilled your milk.

Conversations with Whitney
This picture is one that only a mom will really get. It was a mom moment. At my nephews wedding she was sitting a row up with my sister. I looked at her and she's so grown up. And Nate was sitting next to me and he's so grown up. And I realized I will never have that moment again. So I snapped this picture to remember.
This was from rehearsal dinner. From l-r: Brandon, age 21; Jeff, age 19; Nate, age 19; Soffia (the bride), age 22; Cameron, age 23; Whitney, age 15.
And this is just another of her self portraits.
